MSBOA Solo and Ensemble Festival

The Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association ("MSBOA") offers instrumental Solo and Ensemble ("S&E") Festival for string, wind, percussion and piano students.  This is an excellent opportunity for HSMA students to grow as musicians.  Please see our calendar for S&E dates and deadlines.


Senior High District Solo & Ensemble Festival


Eligibility and requirements:

  • All instrumentalists in grades 10, 11, and 12; any 9th grade instrumentalist not participating in Junior High S&E
  • Minimum length of event:  2 minutes
  • Maximum length of event: 8 minutes
  • An original score, with measures numbered, for the adjudicator
  • All parts as reflected in the score must be played
  • Only one performer per part
  • A student may perform in a maximum of three events
  • A student may perform only one solo per instrument
  • A student may accompany any number of events for other performers
  • Accompaniment must be played, if written
  • All participants, except accompanists, must be registered HSMA students

  • Name(s):  For ensembles, the first name listed will be considered the leader. The leader of the ensemble will be billed the ensemble costs and will be responsible  to collect reimbursement from other members of the ensemble
  • Grade (soloists only)
  • Instrument(s)
  • Whether or not accompaniment is required
  • Accompanist’s name (this helps reduce scheduling conflicts)
  • Time you would prefer to perform: early, middle or late


Junior High Solo & Ensemble Festival

Eligibility and requirements:

  • All instrumentalists in grades 7 and 8; any 9th grade instrumentalist not participating in Senior High S&E
  • Minimum length of event:  90 seconds
  • Maximum length of event: 8 minutes
  • An original score, with measures numbered, for the adjudicator
  • All parts as reflected in the score must be played
  • Only one performer per part
  • A student may perform in a maximum of three events
  • A student may perform only one solo per instrument
  • A student may accompany any number of events for other performers
  • Accompaniment must be played, if written
  • All participants, except accompanists, must be registered HSMA students

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • The event earned a I ("Superior") rating at District S&E

Students and ensembles who are nominated for or selected for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival All-Michigan Honors Band or Orchestra, or nominated for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Concerto Compitition or Michigan Youth Arts Small Ensemble Competition come from the highest rated events at the State Festival.  Check the HSMA calendar for dates
